Join Evanston writers Joanne Jacobson and Ann Hudson for a discussion of how Jacobson’s trilogy of memoirs recall Evanston landmarks like the B&G diner, the Evanshire Pharmacy, and Lee Street Beach: their cheeseburgers and cherry Cokes, perfume samplers and roasted nuts, their textures of sand and sun. And we’ll explore how remembering and writing about Evanston—or any home—evolves and changes over one writer’s lifetime: how “memory” itself is written and re-written. About Joanne Jacobson After nearly fifty years in Iowa, France, Vermont and New York City, and deep into the global pandemic, Joanne Jacobson returned to southeast Evanston—the neighborhood where she grew up. Jacobson has published three memoirs set in Evanston: Hunger Artist: A Suburban Childhood (2007); Every Last Breath: A Memoir of Two Illnesses (2020); and In the Photic Zone (2026). She has taught courses in American literature and culture and in nonfiction writing at the University of Iowa, the University of Angers, Middlebury College, and Yeshiva University. Since retiring and returning home in 2021, she has taught courses on writing about the body in the medical humanities programs at Northwestern and University of Illinois-Chicago. About Ann Hudson Ann Hudson is the author of three poetry collections, most recently Subtraction Isn’t Always Less (Next Page Press, 2024). She has received residencies from Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and the Midwest Writing Center, and was the finalist for a Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg poetry prize. Ann is a senior editor for the poetry journal Rhino and a teaching artist and Director of Education for Hive Center for the Book Arts in Evanston, Illinois. Scroll down to RSVP In-person event* At the Evanston History Center 225 Greenwood Evanston, IL Evanston-based artist Blanche Gildin (1928–2024) studied at Chicago’s Institute of Design for just two years, from 1947 to 1949. What she carried from that experience, however, shaped her artistic practice across more than seven decades. Gildin’s career unfolded largely outside the spotlight of museums and markets. Like many women artists of her generation, she worked in private- often in or near her home in southeast Evanston- and alternative spaces, guided less by recognition than by curiosity and discipline. Her art offers a powerful reminder that the influence of an educational institution is not measured only by its famous names or iconic moments, but by the quiet, persistent practices it sets in motion. The talk by Dr. Lara Allison will be followed by a discussion with Bonny Gildin, the artist's daughter, and Jack Weiss of Design Evanston, who also studied at the Institute of Design. About Dr. Lara Allison Dr. Lara Allison teaches design history at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her research examines Chicago design culture, mid-twentieth-century corporate design, and the influence of the Bauhaus on academic, cultural, and corporate institutions in the United States during the interwar and post–World War II periods. She serves as Education Chair on the Board of the Chicago Design Archive and is editor of Chicago Art Deco Magazine. She was a contributing author and a member of the editorial advisory team for Art Deco Chicago: Designing Modern America (Yale University Press/CADS, 2018). Lara recently wrote a book on the artist, Blanche Gildin: Back to the Bauhaus, the Foundations of a Practice (published by Design Evanston with support from the City of Evanston). Scroll down to RSVP In-person event* At the Evanston History Center 225 Greenwood Evanston, IL The Emerson Street Branch YMCA served as a segregated facility for fifty-five years in Evanston, Illinois, providing activities and services during the era of Jim Crow. Known locally as the Emerson Y, this branch not only served the local Black community but fast became the place to be. It served as a community meeting space for numerous organizations and congregations and provided needed social services. Its closing in 1969 and the eventual destruction of the building left a collective open wound within the community, while its history began to fade with each passing decade. Join us as Gatherings author and founder of Shorefront Legacy Center Dino Robinson shares his in depth research into the Emerson Y’s establishment, impactful history, the path to its closing and demolition, and the current resolve of the Evanston Y towards healing. About Morris E. (Dino) Robinson  Morris E. Robinson Jr. is the author of A Place We Can Call Our Home (1996), Through the Eyes of Us (1998), the first edition of Gatherings (2004), and A Decade to Remember (2023, Shorefront Press). Robinson’s work in gathering oral histories, artifacts, and documents since 1995 led to his founding of Shorefront in 2002 and the Shorefront Legacy Center in 2010, an archive and research center that documents the local Black communities along Gatherings is a publication of Shorefront Press.
